The Keft of a saw is the measurement of its cut and Kerfing is age old wood working technique.
You can cut across the grain to make the piece of wood pliable, so it can form curves, like the body of a guitar. Cutting with the grain is used to relieve the inherent tensions in the wood.
For the last ten years this technique has been used as a surface treatment by some designers, e.g. Oooms and more recently Paolo Ulian and Moreno Ratti.
