RnB [the reDesign project] side B

Image

Well here it is, the eagerly anticipated side B of RnB [the reDesign project].

The reDesign project is an experiment into using music as inspiration in the design process, we ‘remix’ existing designs according to various musical genres, with the hope of making design as expressive as music.

Rietveld’s Red/Blue was one of the most revolutionary chairs of the 20th century and now nearly a hundred years later the revolution continues.

D-W-A [working with music] draws its inspiration from the music industry where sampling, remixing, covers and collaborations are commonplace.

The reDesign project is based on a 12” vinyl single release and is realized at a scale of 1:3 so as to keep the pieces around 12″. This iconic chair has been interpreted according to various musical genres including down tempo, chill-out and dub.

As Rietveld continued to work on his Red/Blue throughout his life, so to has The Dza continued to work with his idea of altering the original according to various musical genres.

RnB Lounge [Fusion]

Image

Is a fusion of styles from the beginning and end of the last century. Jazz was the most popular musical style at the beginning of the 20th century a time when the chaise was also popular. This is combined with the most popular style of music from the end of the 20th century, Hip Hop. The result is a fusion of the new and old, as Guru did with his Jazzmatazz series of records. With the extended armrest you can practice your Cadillac lean. The result is a contemporary version of a classic piece of furniture.                        RnB Lounge has been made using the original drawings; the proportions and angles have been altered.

RnB Dubstar [Dub]

Image

Is inspired by dub music, a genre that started in Jamaica back in the 60’s and 70’s. It all started with some low-tech instrumentals of popular singles, and from those early days it grew into one of the most influential genres of the 20th century. RnB Dudstar is an homage to those early day when a few pioneering producers changed the music world forever. Dub is traditionally bass heavy, and uses echoes and repetition a lot. With this in mind Dza made the chair using heavier section battens, a wider seat and back, an increased back angle. With the addition of upholstery this makes the chair far more comfortable than even RnB King Tubby.                                                                                                                   RnB Dubstar has been made using the original drawings; the proportions and angles have been altered.

Is a complete redesign of all the original dimensions and angles. The result is a more comfortable version of the design icon, the seat is higher and wider and the back angle has been increased. Some say that a lower seat makes a chair appear more comfortable, this may be true. However comfort comes from the use of an object, thus Dza has raised the seat to make it more comfortable to get in and out of.                                                            RnB Blackstar has been made using the original drawings; the proportions and angles have been altered.

RnB Sofa King [Chill-out]

Image

Is the ultimate sofa, taking the original little chair and redesigning it for the new world, that it was such a large part in creating. Dza wanted to make a version that you could relax on in comfort with a friend, mellow out and just lounge. The addition of upholstery makes this sofa a product for the 21st centaury.                                                                                         RnB Sofa King has been made using the original drawings; the proportions and angles have been altered.

Endtroducing BeSign

BeSign is the part of the site where we try to tattle the problem of trendy BS design pollution. Design pollution is all around us, most of it is just badly designed cheap products, but it seems to be an ever growing problem amoung the Super Designers,. Who it seems have little interest in functional enviromentaly friendly design, and are more interested in cashing in on their often undeserved reputations.

A Boston baby I was born in Essex County

On the street is where they found me

This town, this is my life

Growin’ up as a Beantown baby

This town, this is my life

Snoozing on my dead arm

Back of the T train, my daydream

Should I make a phat hit or should I take CREAM?
